Second place in government ICT uptake
UAE first
worldwide in mobile network coverage
The United Arab Emirates has topped
the world’s countries in mobile network
coverage, according to the latest Net-
worked Readiness Index (NRI) report is-
sued by the World Economic Forum.
The UAE ranked second worldwide in
several indices, including government
ICT usage, government success in ICT
promotion, Impact of ICTs on new ser-
vices & products and ICT use & gov’t ef-
ficiency.
The report, which measures capacity of
economies around the world to leverage
ICT for growth, development and social
well-being, has ranked UAE second in
the Gulf Region in the Networked Readi-
ness Index (NRI).
With the theme, ‘Rewards and Risks of
Big Data’, the NRI study was published
in the Global Information Technology
Report 2014 and is based on data col-
lected by organizations such as the In-
ternational Telecommunications Union,
the World Bank, and the United Nations.
Finland, Singapore, Sweden and the
Netherlands again topped the list re-
spectively, while the UAE moved up one
position to reach the 24th place out of
148 countries.
According to the report, UAE ranked first
worldwide in Mobile Network Coverage
in terms of the percentage of population
covered, first in Importance of ICTs to
government vision of the future and sec-
ond in government usage of ICT.
UAE has also obtained second place in
Government Success in ICT Promotion,
Impact of ICTs on new services & prod-
ucts and ICT use & gov’t efficiency.
It ranked third in Government procure-
ment of advanced technology products
and fourth place in Laws relating to ICTs,
Impact of ICTs on new services & prod-
ucts and Availability of latest technolo-
gies.
UAE improved in its ICT infrastructure to
reach (30th) and ICT uptake by individu-
als (29th) leading to greater economic
impacts (27th) and thus the rise in the
global rankings.
