The British government has
allowed customers to deposit
cheques into their accounts by
taking photos of their cheques
on their smartphones and send
them to the bank electronically.
With this move, rather than
going to the bank in person,
customers will be able to pho-
tograph the cheque, and send
it electronically.
The British government is set
to launch a consultation on the
idea with a view to make the
necessary legal changes.
The new technology is ex-
pected to cut the time taken in
cheque processing from six to
two days.
Banks say that the new meth-
od will make cheque process
-
ing more convenient and more
secure.
In the United States of Ameri-
ca, this method has been ad-
opted 9 years back after the
attacks on the World Trade
Center.
The industry says that most
younger account holders pre-
fer e-payment systems and
rarely use cheques.

40% of Android
users in UAE neglect
security
A survey conducted by B2B International
and Kaspersky Lab revealed that more
than 40% of Android-based smartphone
and tablet owners in the UAE do not use
any security software to protect their de-
vices against cyber-threats while Android
has become the most popular platform
for users. 58% of smartphone and 57%
of tablet owners in the UAE said that they
have installed a security solution on their
devices and are now using it. Other re-
spondents relied on the limited security
features integrated in the OS, or trust their
own instincts to keep them safe.
According to Kaspersky Security Network,
which accumulates data about urgent
cyber-threats, 99% of current malware
samples targeting mobile devices have
been developed for the Android platform.
And this threat is growing: Kaspersky Lab
specialists detected 35,000 malicious
samples for the whole of 2012, while the
figure for the first half of 2013 was over
47,000.
