H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Di-
rector General of the Telecommunica-
tions Regulatory Authority and head of
the United Arab Emirates’ official delega-
tion at the Plenipotentiary Conference
of the International Telecommunications
Union (ITU), held a series of bilateral
meetings with senior officials at the con-
ference. The ITU officials included Kim
Lee, Chairman of the 19th Plenipoten-
tiary Conference, Houlin Zhao, ITU Sec-
retary-General, François Rancy, Director
of ITU’s Radiocommunication Bureau,
Brahima Sanou, Director of the Telecom-
munication Development Bureau, and
Malcolm Johnson, the elected Deputy
Secretary-General.
During these meetings, H.E. Al Ghanim
discussed many important topics related
to global ICT sector with focus on issues
connected to the UAE.
He also stressed on the UAE willingness
to support all events and conferences
held by the International Telecommuni-
cation Union, pointing out that the world’s
efforts should be focused on support-
ing the ICT sector due to its vital role in
achieving sustainable development in a
world where economy is based on knowl-
edge, digital data and smart cities.
Al Ghanim extended his appreciations to
all members of the ITU member states
who supported the nomination of the
United Arab Emirates for the member-
ship of the ITU Council and the member-
ship of Engineer Nasser Bin Hammad in
the Radio Regulation Board.
He also expressed his profound gratitude
for the ITU for supporting the UAE’s bid
to host the 20th edition of the Plenipoten-
tiary Conference in 2018.
“We feel proud of the achievements we
have made at the International Telecom-
munication Union, which will celebrate
its 150th anniversary next year. And we
are honoured to announce that the UAE
is the Gold Sponsor of the anniversary
celebrations. The results of the elections
are a testament on the UAE’s prestigious
stature among countries of the world and
the confidence given to our country while
sponsoring the 150th anniversary cel-
ebrations next year. They also reflect our
confidence in the future role of the Union,
particularly in light of the tremendous de-
velopments in knowledge economy and
society, governments and smart cities,”
commented H.E. Mohamed Nasser Al
Ghanim after the meetings.

tions are a testament of the UAE’s prestigious stature
to contribute in building their nation.
Adeeb raised the youth empowerment
topic to the audience and stressed on the
need to support youth initiatives and em-
power young people around the world by
giving them the right opportunities to con-
tribute to the development of digital tech-
nology and communication sector and in
promoting creativity and innovation.
“On behalf of young people around the
world, I ask you to listen to the voice of
young people and engage them in setting
ICT policies and related services. I must
point out that many young people around
the world did not have the opportunity to
get a proper education and suffer from
lack of infrastructure and necessary em-
powering tools they need to be able to
participate and engage in the develop-
ment process. These children are count-
ing on the efforts of the ITU to enable them
to use their skills and talents in the serving
their communities,” Adeeb said.
At the end of his speech, the audience ap-
plauded warmly, and Adeeb and his family
were the center of attention among many
of the participants who showed their admi-
ration and appreciation to the young Emi-
rati talent.
His Excellence Mohamed Nasser Al
Ghanim, Director General of TRA, and
head of the UAE delegation at the ITU
Plenipotentiary Conference 2014, deliv-
ered a speech on behalf of participat-
ing Arab League. He congratulated Mr.
Malcolm Johnson of United Kingdom, for
occupying the Deputy Secretary-Gen-
eral position in the ITU, and expressed
the UAE’s willingness to work with him
in order to achieve the objectives of the
Union in deployment of ICT technologies
for continuous worldwide sustainable
development.
