Ramadan is a period of spiritual purification and enlightenment when all nationals and expatriate residents, whether Muslims or not, experience its spirit, feel the essence of the Emirati heritage, and the UAE’s core values of hospitality, giving and solidarity.
Fast is broken and iftar is enjoyed with family members, friends and the community. Ramadan tents are set up for this purpose where people from different nationalities, social status and financial backgrounds sit together to break their fast.
Red Crescent Authority (RCA) and Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation set up tents in various locations in the UAE to offer free Iftar meals. Tents are usually seen near mosques, in open spaces and at the entrances of some Emiratis' houses.
The Ramadan majlis, is another tradition which deepens the bonds among the members of the family, relatives and friends and emphasises the UAE’s vision in preserving a cohesive society. After iftar and prayers family and friends gather and share their thoughts on general community issues. Light food, local coffee and dates are served at the majlis.
Senior government officials often take part in these gatherings. They hear people’s feedback about issues that affect them and discuss different issues concerning the community welfare. This year Sharjah Government will hold a special majlis in Ramadan that will host dignitaries and thought leaders.
Islamic affairs’ entities such as General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments and others in each emirate conduct a number of lectures and sermons on the various aspects of Ramadan at various mosques across the country. Many other social and religious events and activities take place during Ramadan and Eid. Find out about them in the events section.
Charity is an essential part of Ramadan. This year is the Year of Giving, as declared by H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. It is a good opportunity for every individual, corporate and social organisation to be part of the UAE’s humanitarian legacy. Get involved in charity. Refer to the list of charitable organisations in the UAE and see how you can contribute to the poor and the needy.
The impact of Ramadan can be experienced in all spheres of life in the UAE: social, business, cultural and entertainment. Changes include reduction in working hours and observance of certain guidelines for Muslims and Non-Muslims. However, the UAE government’s services will be available around the clock through this portal and the UAE Government Apps.
