The global stage recognizes the United Arab Emirates as a pivotal center for business, trade, logistics, transportation, green technology, and diverse tourism. With abundant clean energy sources and a unique infrastructure, our country is well-positioned to forge connections and foster consensus to propel comprehensive advancements in climate action, steering us towards a more sustainable future. The UAE stands as an exemplary global model in its unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This commitment is reinforced through a series of initiatives and events organized throughout the year, emphasizing the support for the strategic goals outlined in national sustainability plans. Notably, the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative stands as a testament to our dedication. The proclamation by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, designating the year 2023 as the "Year of Sustainability" under the banner "Today for Tomorrow," underscores His Highness's keen interest in making sustainability a paramount national priority in UAE policy. Sport emerges as a key element, playing a crucial role in championing climate and environmental sustainability while serving as a foundational pillar for personal and public health. Beyond providing entertainment for individuals and teams, it actively promotes a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. These principles align seamlessly at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), convened in the United Arab Emirates from November 30 to December 12, 2023. At COP28, the global community unites to collaborate on climate action, explore opportunities for cooperation, find solutions to climate challenges, and assess governments' progress in implementing climate action plans to combat global warming and other pressing environmental issues, ensuring a sustainable future. Sport takes center stage as a pivotal factor in this context, contributing significantly to improving overall health and consequently reducing the demand for medical care and its associated environmental impact. Encouraging physical activity mitigates chronic diseases, such as obesity and cardiovascular conditions, alleviating pressure on the healthcare system and enhancing sustainability. Moreover, a dual focus on public health and sustainability stimulates innovation in sports. This is evident in the development of environmentally friendly sports materials and technology, enhancing athletes' performance in sustainable ways. Artificial intelligence techniques play a role in refining athletes' training regimens and evaluating the environmental impact of sports activities. By hosting major sporting events like the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Grand Prix, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to sustainability. These events embrace environmentally friendly practices, featuring eco-conscious facilities and leveraging advanced technology to minimize environmental impact. Those championing the cause of sustainability are actively promoting the adoption of eco-friendly transportation methods for both participants and audiences. This concerted effort not only contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions but also plays a pivotal role in enhancing air quality. In water sports, the UAE's commitment to sustainability is highlighted through events like the traditional (heritage) boat racing championship, emphasizing the preservation of water cleanliness and the national aquatic environment. Awareness campaigns are organized to underscore the importance of preserving seas and oceans, highlighting sports as a bridge between present and future generations in safeguarding marine resources. At the individual level, the UAE is spearheading sports initiatives designed to foster inclusive participation among individuals of all genders and age groups. Outdoor exercise programs and community sports activities are actively promoted to enhance physical fitness and cultivate a vibrant environment for a healthy lifestyle. This emphasis on public health underscores our commitment to empowering future generations to embrace an active, healthy and well-rounded lifestyle. Strategically, the UAE views sports projects as exemplifying dedication to sustainability. This commitment is evident in a series of successive sporting events that actively advocate for environmentally friendly practices, motivating the masses to take incremental steps toward sustainability. Encouraging the use of green transportation to access sports facilities is a key focus, alleviating traffic congestion and reducing harmful gas emissions. Stadiums have already initiated measures to enhance energy efficiency and implement effective waste management, contributing significantly to mitigating the adverse environmental impacts of sporting events. In conclusion, the symbiotic relationship between sport and sustainability transcends mere recreation. Sport emerges as a vital ally in our collective pursuit of climate and environmental sustainability, serving as a catalyst for promoting public health and safeguarding a clean environment. Integrating sport into our lifestyle not only enhances overall health but also plays a pivotal role in preserving our planet's well-being. By embracing this holistic concept of sport, we can construct a more sustainable and healthier society for future generations. Hosting COP28 for the first time in the country marks a crucial step in solidifying the UAE's standing among the world's leading nations dedicated to proposing sustainable solutions to climate challenges. As we embark on this journey, athletes and officials must exemplify a high level of preparedness and commitment, adopting further initiatives that seamlessly integrate sports and sustainability. This aligns with the strategic goal outlined in the "National Sports Strategy 2031," aiming to increase sports participation in society to reach 71% of the population.
