“Dendroid”
converts Android Apps
into spywares
IT experts warned that a new software
named “Dendroid” can transform legiti
-
mate Android applications into malicious
software and Trojans, paving the way for
cheap and easy development of sophis-
ticated generations of Android malware.
In a blog post, Symantec IT Security re

searchers said “Dendroid”, which is being
sold for US$ 300, is marketed as an “An
-
droid Remote Administration Tool”.
On its website, the US computer maga
-
zine, PC World, stated that the Dendroid
and can be used to create legitimate ap-
plications with malicious code added to
them that connect back to a command-
and-control server and allow attackers to
perform a variety of malicious actions on
devices that have those apps installed
without knowledge of their owners.
Dendroid’s malicious features include
deleting call logs and files; calling phone
numbers; opening Web pages; recording
calls and audio from the microphone; in-
tercepting text messages; taking and up-
loading photos and videos.

company, said that “Dendroid is an im

proved remote access tool that signals
a shift in the malware landscape for the
Android platform”.

showing that UAE online consumers are
leading the e-commerce in the region.
50 percent of respondents to the study
said they primarily use the internet for
shopping.
MasterCard’s “The Online Shopping Be

havior 2014” study is a tool for measuring
consumers’ behavior in regards to online
shopping. The study included responses
from 3,000 people from six markets in the
region.
According to the study, internet shoppers
are spending their money on airline tick-
ets, groceries, books, CDs, DVDs and
travel-related products and services as
well as clothing.
As much as 50 percent of respondents
pointed out that they mostly make their
purchases through Souq.com, which the
largest e-commerce website in the Arab
region, followed by “Cobone” and “Grou
-
pon”, attracting 20 percent of shoppers.
Aaron Oliver, head of emerging payments
for Middle East and Africa at MasterCard,
said that the advanced internet infra-
structure and availability of more options
for secure e-payment channels provide
a good opportunity for companies to in-
crease their presence on the internet and
develop their businesses and consumer
base. Online shopping meets consumers’
aspirations who are looking for fast and
safe transactions, driving further the
growth of e-commerce, he noted.
“The steady growth of online
shopping trends in the UAE
sheds light on the priorities of the
technology-savvy new age consum-
er, who now enjoys the convenience,
speed, value for money and safety of their
transactions while shopping online,” Oli

ver added.
