National Dialogue for Food Security 2023

About:

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment launched the National Dialogue for Food Security (NDFS) as part of its strategy to develop agribusiness and responsible investment in agriculture and sustainable food systems. It is one of the main objectives of promoting research and development programs and adopting advanced technology to enhance food, water and environmental security.

 

It aims to:

discuss the various challenges and issues that contribute to enhancing the food security of the UAE.

 

Process:

It depends on managing constructive dialogue and discussion between the various actors and partners in the country from both the government and private sectors

In the form of a monthly meeting to ensure the application of the participatory design method.

Outcome

In 2024, the UAE's Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) implemented several initiatives to bolster food security and support farmers:

1. Support the 'Plant the Emirates' National Programme: This program serves as an incubator for ideas and innovations aimed at enhancing the agricultural sector. Key objectives include:

• Increasing the number of productive farms by 20% and organic farms by 25%.
• Encouraging the adoption of climate-smart solutions across 30% of farms.
• Reducing agricultural food waste by 50%.

2. Establishment of the National Agricultural Centre: The center focuses on supporting Emirati farmers to boost domestic agricultural production. It provides:

• Grants and funding for innovative agricultural projects.
• Training programs to empower farmers.
• Promotion of modern agricultural technologies.

3. Engagement with Farmers in the Eastern Region: MOCCAE held meetings with farmers to discuss enhancing crop productivity and addressing future needs. These sessions facilitated:

• Open dialogue to understand farmers' priorities.
• Discussions on adopting climate-smart agricultural technologies.

4. Collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): MOCCAE partnered with FAO to establish the first Regional Center of Excellence for Transforming Food Systems in the UAE. This center aims to:

• Drive innovation in food systems.

• Developing the skills of agricultural extension agents.
