The extent of the students' awareness about the Child Protection Unit and reporting channels in educational institutions

Subject:

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is keen on implementing the country's directions regarding child protection. In this respect, the MoE utilizes the legislative structure in the country related to the child's affairs, such as Child Protection Law "WADEEMA" and its executive regulations. The MoE has established the Child Protection Unit in 2018 to serve as an integrated system that addresses all forms of abuse of children in educational institutions, whether verbal, physical, or psychological, in cooperation with the various competent authorities in the country. The MoE has also qualified educational staff and trained them according to the highest standards in cooperation with the UNICEF, with the aim of providing an educational environment that responds as quickly as possible to any report of child abuse to identify its causes and treat its negative effects on the child. The MoE provides three ways to receive the reports in the Child Protection Unit, namely the hotline, which receives calls 24/7 (80085), Child Protection Unit email address (cpu@moe.gov.ae), and the electronic reporting form on the MoE's website.

Objective:

The objective of the questionnaire is to measure the students' awareness about their rights and the available reporting channels. We also aim to measure the impact of the child protection programs on enhancing awareness about protection and reporting procedures. We are also pleased to receive the public's suggestions and views to enhance our services related to child protection.

Outcome

Outcome:

First, the Ministry of Education (MoE) would like to thank all those who had participated in the questionnaire for sharing their views and suggestions. We received 163 contributions. After analyzing the data, we took the following optimization steps based on the inputs:

- Raising the awareness about the Child Protection Unit by establishing a media plan that focuses on the unit's tasks and means of reporting.

- The Bullying Prevention in the School Environment Policy and the policy's procedural manual have been communicated, so that everyone makes use of them.

- Holding a number of virtual awareness workshops, where all the aspects of child protection in the educational institutions have been discussed. The number of attendees have reached 70,799, including parents, students of all grades, and educational staff.

- The Council for "Child Protection in the Educational Institutions" has been formed and presided by the MoE. It has in its membership 20 federal and local institutions, associations, and public benefit associations, to facilitate the implementation of joint initiatives that serve the interests of children.

- Developing the Guide to Child Protection Procedures in Educational Institutions and submitting it for approval by the competent authorities.

- Efforts will be made to apply a program to protect children, which will be mandatory for all educational institutions staff. The program will be introduced through a virtual training platform that includes certain training hours for every job category, to ensure that everyone is aware of the methods and procedures of child protection.
