The Importance of Academic and Career Counseling for Students

Subject:

In line with the Ministry of Education's effort to involve the community in its decision-making process, the Ministry has launched the "We Shape Our Policies" platform. It is an interactive platform that aims to involve the community, including parents, students, and educational staff in the process of developing and evaluating national educational policies. This will be implemented by proposing a draft of educational policies to be presented to the public for their feedback and suggestions in order to further develop them in accordance with the highest quality standards.

The platform includes important topics such as Academic and Career Counseling. Academic counseling is defined as "the process of guiding students by assisting them in making appropriate academic decisions and aiding them in setting and achieving educational goals". Career Counseling is "the process of guiding students in making appropriate career decisions as well as choosing educational fields that suit their career interests, qualifications, and related skills".

With that said, we are looking forward to hearing your ideas on the importance of Academic and Career Counseling in enhancing the development and qualifications of students currently in general or higher education.

Objective:

The Ministry of Education aims to create a space for innovation and cooperation between the Ministry and its partners, including students, parents, educational staff, and the greater community in order to develop its educational policies in line with the public's aspirations.

Outcome

Decision making:

First, we would like to thank you for taking part in the Ministry of Education's (MoE) efforts to enhance the quality of life of the students by establishing student focused policies. The MoE is always keen on raising the awareness of its students and providing them with the skills necessary to build their professional and academic careers.

After analyzing the participations and data, the following has been done:

-    The students have been encouraged to attend the most significant fairs that attract the most prominent higher education institutions and employers and to utilize the MoE's electronic services targeting high school students, in order to provide direct counselling to them to help them decide on their future academic and professional preferences.

example: A seminar to guide students on their academic and professional careers in Najah Abu Dhabi

-  Cooperating with the competent, specialized institutions to support and guide the students. The MoE, in this context, has given through its booth in the International Education Fair (IEF), in cooperation with the Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation (MOHRE), two workshops on understanding the requirements of the labor market, raising the awareness on the future jobs requirements, and introducing the work environments and basic principles and values of future jobs.

-       Activating the Emirates Scale for Career Tendencies service, which helps the students to learn more about their preferences to choose the major they would like to study in the future.
