The preparation
of students for the labor market now extends beyond the pre-graduation phase;
it begins at the onset of their college studies and continues across multiple
levels. At the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), our programs and majors are
designed to align with the evolving demands of the labor market. We continually
review and update these programs to ensure they provide the knowledge and
skills necessary for future employment.
As a result,
existing study programs are being updated, and new ones are being introduced.
However, this alone isn't sufficient to ensure student readiness. It is
essential to collaborate with labor sectors to offer practical training
opportunities that provide hands-on experience similar to future professional
environments. These experiences should align with students' majors and enrich
their overall college experience. In this context, the HCT Apprenticeship
Program has been established to support applied learning and strengthen
students' connections to the realities of the labor market.
In the 2023-2024
academic year, HCT began rolling out the Apprenticeship Program, tailored to
the unique requirements of each academic track. For students in Applied
Bachelor's programs, the program features a 16-week vocational training period
(equivalent to a full semester), during which students work full-time at the
training organization relevant to their specialization, governed by a clear
contract outlining their tasks and responsibilities. For students in Vocational
Diploma programs, the apprenticeship lasts for three semesters, with students
dividing their time between HCT and the training organization and engaging in
specific work tasks at each stage based on their specialization.
In the previous
academic year, over 6,700 students engaged in the HCT Apprenticeship Program, spanning
nearly 30 majors within the Applied Bachelor's and Vocational Diploma programs.
Training opportunities included both government and private sector
organizations, with a particular emphasis on the private sector to familiarize
students with this vital area and encourage their involvement. Upon completing
their training, students receive a certificate of experience that enhances
their applied studies and sharpens their professional skills, equipping them
with a better understanding of labor market demands and challenges while
improving their future employment prospects.
"Apprenticeship" is a comprehensive professional learning experience that enables students to apply their scientific and technological knowledge and skills in a real work setting, enhancing their familiarity with their chosen field. It also provides them with the opportunity to explore potential career paths, facilitating their professional development and empowerment as both students and graduates.

This is good for the students, as they can develop their practical skills in an industry they enjoy. I think the program will help decrease the labour market shortage in practical fields.

Having contributed to the design and assessment of and delivered a Work Readiness programme some 13 years ago at HCT and being an advocate and ambassador of Workbase Learning programmes, in many evolving formats since 1983, I am delighted to read this blog today. The development of customised career-path specific hard skills coupled with meta skills provides a launchpad for future competent, confident and suitably skilled employees-in-waiting. Partnership working with industry is ‘key’.
