Gulf Theatre: Sustaining Knowledge and Celebrating Cultural Heritage
By Dr. Mona Al-Suwaidi - Projects and programs Advisor, Cultural & Creative Industries Sector
Since its commencement, the Gulf Theatre Festival has served as a platform for showcasing the exceptional creative talents of the Gulf region in the performing arts. This festival has allowed numerous theatrical icons to l make lasting contributions, creating works that have become vital to the cultural memory and identity of Gulf societies. These contributions have not only enriched the Gulf's artistic heritage but also reinforced the cultural identity, heritage, and values that define the region.
This year, we were honoured to participate in the 14th edition of the Gulf Theatre Festival, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This prestigious cultural gathering brings together theatre practitioners from across the Gulf and the broader Arab world to exchange ideas, share experiences, and present compelling theatrical works. After a hiatus, the festival returns with renewed energy, featuring prominent figures in Gulf theatre and celebrating the legacy of those who have shaped its history. The event pays tribute to notable pioneers such as the late Dr. Ibrahim Ghuloom, the late Abdullah Al-Saadaawi, and the late Musa Zainal, who passed away recently among many other influential contributors who have significantly enhanced the theatre movement in the Gulf and strengthened its presence on both regional and international stages.
Umm Al Quwain National Theatre represented the UAE at the festival with their presentation of the play Ashofak (I See You). Written by Abdullah Ismail, the play was awarded Best Script during the festival. Ashofak is a work of remarkable depth and originality, inspired by true historical events from the 1950s. It centres around Jarnas, a city night watchman who serves a powerful influence on the townspeople-a beacon of light guiding them through the darkness of ignorance and indifference. The script excels in its exploration of contrasts and its skilful use of symbolism, weaving together stories and scenarios with masterful precision.
We take pride in celebrating Emirati artist Ahmed Al Jasmi, who was honoured at the festival in recognition of his glorious career spanning decades and marked by significant contributions to theatre and drama in the Gulf. Al Jasmi has made substantial impacts through his memorable roles and tireless efforts to develop the local artistic landscape and mentor young talent. His work has left an indelible mark on Emirati and Arab art, establishing him as one of the most prominent figures in the field. This well-deserved recognition reflects his enduring legacy and deep commitment to enriching cultural and artistic expression.
Participation in this festival offers an invaluable opportunity for the theatre community of Umm Al Quwain to showcase their work and engage in artistic dialogue with their peers from across the Gulf. This engagement fosters the growth and development performing arts throughout the region. At the Ministry of Culture, we take immense pride in the festival and its dedicated efforts to advance theatre and support its practitioners. Our involvement highlights the UAE's rich cultural presence on both regional and global stages. Through events like these, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a culture that inspires and transcends boundaries, broadening horizons of human connection and mutual understanding among nations. In doing so, we continue to strengthen the UAE's role as a global cultural beacon.
