The Dubai Smart Government (DSG) has
completed its technological, media and ad-
ministrative preparations for participating in
34th edition of Gitex Technology Week 2014.
Gitex will take place in Dubai International
Convention and Exhibition Centre in Octo-
ber 2014. DSG announced that as many as
37 government entities are participating in
the event after five new government entities
joined this year’s list of participating entities.
The stand will witness a unique event where
an independent part of the stand will be
dedicated to displaying a realistic model that
simulates smart services in the government
of the government and city of the future and
where the smart services provided by Dubai
Government to three segments: tourist sec-
tor, business sector and individuals (citizens
and residents) will be showcased.
Mohammed Bin Rashid School of
Government (MBRSG) hosted a lec-
ture titled “The Internet of Everything:
Smart Cities and Beyond”. Wim Elf-
rink, Cisco’s Executive Vice President
for Industry Solutions and Chief Glo-
balisation Officer was a guest speaker
at the event.
Elfrink added that with the unprec-
edented connectivity to the internet,
90% of data that exists today was
created in the last two years. Interest-
ingly, more new data has been gen-
erated since 2012 than the last 5,000
years.
He explained that with this huge ex-
pansion in connectivity, we are soon
to face a rise in innovation and stream
of new industries, leading to competi-
tion between cities. These new mod-
ern cities will be sustainable only if
they integrate next generation smart
technologies into the urban infrastruc-
ture.
Elfrink pointed out that the Internet
of Everything could generate an esti-
mated US$6.9 billion of value to public
sectors in the UAE in sectors such as
transport, energy, education, real es-
tate and construction among others.
