There is a broad consensus that social media platforms have a lot of effect on societies in general considering they are easily accessible by the old, young, literate, illiterate, rich and poor. Such social media platforms affect us and transfer our effect to others. Therefore, there should be guiding principles for using these channels. Social media etiquettes protect the reputation of not only the individual using the social media but also of their country.

On 23 October 2019, H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai tweeted a list of 10 guidelines that Emiratis should observe when using social media. The list encourages Emiratis who represent their country online to reflect the reputation and ethics of the UAE's Founding Father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. They should also reflect the UAE's accomplishments and humanitarian initiatives, values of modesty, goodness, openness and love for others. They should be a confident person who accepts diversity, is prepared for the uncertainties of future positively and admires his nation.

H. H. added that our country's success in several fields oblige us to have good conduct and be inspiring examples for others. We should show our conduct to the people from 200 nationalities living on the UAE's land. We should show our characteristics of tolerance, coexistence and humanitarian activities which reaches all regions across the world.

H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum calls upon Emiratis to have:

1.       A personality who reflects Zayed's image and ethics when interacting with people

2.       A personality who reflects what the UAE has accomplished in knowledge, culture and civilisation

3.       A personality who shies away from swearing and insulting and avoids shameful conversation

4.       A knowledgeable personality who uses argument and logic in conversation

5.       A personality who appreciates good words, beautiful images and positive interaction with minds, cultures and societies

6.       An informative personality who is useful to others and spreads ideas and social and humanitarian initiatives which are proliferate in the UAE

7.       A personality who is integrated with global surroundings, speaks their language, addresses their issues and positively interacts with their future

8.       A self-confident personality who accepts diversity and builds bridges with other people

9.       A personality who reflects the UAE's modesty, goodness, love of others and openness for other peoples

10.   A personality who adores the nation, is proud of it and sacrifice for it.
