400% increase in 4G LTE device shipments in GCC
IDC research firm said that shipments of 4G LTE devices grew 400%
in GCC, compared to last year. The research firm’s report also said
that smartphones make up 75% of the total phone market in the
GCC, as buyers increasingly make the shift to 4G devices with mar-
ket maturity.
16 million mobile devices are infected
by malicious software
French telecommunications equipment compa-
ny Alcatel-Lucent has published a report, which
found that 16 million mobile devices were hit by
malware over the past year. Malware infections in
mobile devices increased by 25% in 2014, com-
pared to a 20% increase in 2013.
1,059 million Android phones
sold in 2014
In a recent study of global smartphone
market, IDC confirmed that 1,059 million
Android phones were sold in 2014, a fig-
ure that rendered the operating system a
record market share of 81.5% last year.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is again the world’s rich-
est man for the 16th time, his personal fortune rising
$3 billion last year according to Forbes magazine’s
annual ranking of global billionaires.
1 billion data records stolen in 2014
Data breaches increased 49% with almost 1 billion data records
compromised in 2014 – a 78% increase in the number of data
records either lost or stolen in 2013, a new report by digital se-
curity firm Gemalto said.
