The UAE Board on Books for Young People

(UAEBBY) has launched the “Reading Chal-

lenge” initiative, which challenges social me-

dia pioneers to compete in reading stories for

students in schools and kindergartens in the

various emirates of the UAE.

The initiative comes under the umbrella of

“Read.Dream.Create” campaign, which aims

to bring children and books together and

support children’s ability to read, write, inno-

vate and create.

The idea of the challenge is that one activist

on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram will read

different books, especially winning books of

the Etisalat Award for Arabic Children’s Lit-

erature, to a group of school or kindergarten

children in one of the UAE’s emirates. Then,

he/she will select another activist from these

social networking platforms to do the same in

another school or kindergarten.

In a move to support Dubai’s efforts to be

a smart city over the course of the next few

years, the Rochester Institute of Technology

Dubai (RIT Dubai) has introduced the “Smart

City” professional diploma. In its first edition,

the diploma program consists of eight work-

shops over the course of eight months.

The program aims to educate both the public

and private sectors about the importance of

smart city transformation.

Through its innovative initiatives, RIT Dubai

aspires to have a positive and concrete im-

pact on society and the entire world. This

public-private partnership is means to em-

ploy ideas from across various fields. This

is the way of thinking the RIT seeks to rein-

force among its students to enable them to

improve the quality of their lives by benefit-

ting from innovative thinking and advanced

technology.

Pneumatic Tube electronic system

to transport medicine to patients

The Ministry of Public Works devel-

oped an advanced electronic sys-

tem at hospitals constructed by the

Ministry to transfer medicine needed

by patients from the main pharmacy

to various departments without the

need for employees.

The innovative system called “Pneu-

matic Tube” is part of the Ministry’s

efforts to implement the concept of

innovation in the various projects

constructed by the Ministry including

health projects. This comes in line

with its commitment to the national

innovation strategy.

Using the pneumatic tube system,

the main pharmacy receives the

prescription by the physician elec-

tronically, then workers prepare the

required medicine, put it in a special

bottle and send it to the target de-

partment through the electronic sys-

tem. Each department has its own

electronic number. The physician re-

ceives the medicine in a much short-

er time than the traditional system.
