In a world that's changing rapidly and constantly redefining everything around us, it's become clear that university education is no longer just about lecture halls, textbooks, and exams. It's a comprehensive, digital, smart, and fast-paced transformation. Amidst this shift, Zayed University has taken a bold step worth pausing for: it has officially joined the Digital Education Council (DEC), becoming the first university in the UAE to make this ambitious move. What makes this membership remarkable isn't just the global recognition it brings to the university, but also the commitment it represents to a different kind of future where artificial intelligence becomes an integral part of the educational experience. As I followed the announcement, it didn't feel like just another piece of academic news. It felt like the university was opening a window to a new world, one that speaks to its students and faculty in the language of the future. Joining a council that includes over 90 leading educational institutions around the globe isn't just about exchanging expertise; it's about positioning Zayed University at the forefront, where modern education is redefined and the relationship between learners and knowledge is reimagined. In his remarks, Professor Michael Allen, Acting Vice President of Zayed University, expressed a clear vision: artificial intelligence is not a luxury, it's a necessity. It's the tool that will transform theoretical knowledge into practical skills and help us prepare students who are equipped to face the future, not fear it. That's precisely what makes this step more than just a partnership; it's a promise that education at Zayed will be deeper, more meaningful, and more connected to the real world. What truly impressed me was the university's clarity about what's coming next. Beginning in Summer 2025, Zayed University will launch two initiatives under the DEC framework: an "AI in Higher Education Certificate" for faculty and leadership, and an "AI Awareness Program" for students. This means the shift won't only happen at the institutional level, it will reach every individual on campus, from professors to undergraduates. To me, these kinds of steps represent the difference between education that reacts to the world and education that helps shape it. Between universities that wait to see where the future is heading and universities like Zayed that actively help write its story. Digital transformation is no longer a lofty idea on the sidelines; it's a reality we need to live fully and help lead, not just adapt to.
