Social
responsibility is a vital concept in the modern era, and it concerns the
individual's or organization's responsibility for the social and environmental
consequences of its actions and decisions. The importance of social
responsibility is multifaceted
A lot of Quranic
evidence and hadiths show that Islam has given priority to charity and social
responsibility in order to please Allah
Allah Almighty says
in his dear book, "and cooperate in righteousness and piety," as he
says, "whoever volunteers for good, it is good for him," as he says,
"and the money came for his love relatives, orphans, the poor and the
Wayfarer," as well as saying, "and in their money is the right of the
liquid and the deprived" and saying, "whoever works burdened with an
atom of good, he sees,".
During the reign of
Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, the concept of social
responsibility manifested itself in many aspects, as Umar was one of the adult
caliphs who established an ideal model of just governance and compassion for
society.
💵 Social justice:
Omar was putting
justice and equality at the top of his priorities. He promulgated many laws and
legislation that achieve equality between people regardless of their origin or
social status.
One night, the Emir
of the believers, Umar ibn al-Khattab(may Allah be pleased with him), was
inspecting the congregation, and he heard a child crying and said to his mother
to breastfeed him, so the child did not keep silent, so he repeated this to
her, and she said weaning him so that we could get charity from the Muslim
money house, so he went and brought a large bag of flour and carried it on his
back, and the next day he enacted a law in which he would spend on Al - Futtaim
and the infant from the Muslim Money House (2)
Caring for the poor and needy:
He worked to
provide care and support to the poor and needy by establishing a special bureau
for the distribution of Zakat and alms, and he was personally following up the
distribution to ensure that it reached its beneficiaries. Umar's services
appeared clearly in Ramada, as the Muslims in the Hejaz and in Najd were
left-handed, and they were hungry, so he would take food from the Amsar and
distribute it, he would send food and money to the homes of the needy and the
sick, take care of their patients, and prepare their dead at the expense of the
House of money, and he would not provide these services arbitrarily, but he
would limit the names of the poor and those in need of care and care, and those
who actually receive aid, and provide to the needy what they ask.
📚 : Mentoring and
education
He was working to
guide and educate Muslims about the principles of Islam and their importance in
building a just and cooperative society.
Umar's main concern
was to teach Muslims this book-especially those who converted after their
countries were conquered-and therefore he sent teachers from the leading
companions to the open areas to teach them their religion, he sent Abdullah ibn
mas'ud to Kufa, Imran Ibn Husayn and maqlid Ibn Yasar to Basra, and Obadah Ibn
al-Samit, Abu Darda and MU'az Ibn Jabal to the Levant; conquests do not take
root
So that science
would spread everywhere, Umar sent a man wandering among the tribes in the
Badia as a teacher of the Koran, that is, Umar spread compulsory education.
Promotion of
Science and education📜:
He paid great
attention to education and encouraged people to acquire knowledge and skills.
He opened schools and libraries in various parts of the Islamic State.
Taking care of the
environment and infrastructure
Omar was keen to
improve the infrastructure of cities and villages and provide public services .
As for the repair
and paving of roads, which is a basic thing in (infrastructure), Omar paid
great attention to it, and he says: "if a sheep was found in the Euphrates,
I would be afraid to ask about it". This is something unheard of in any of
the previous civilizations, because it is the paving of roads that leads to
easy communication between cities, villages and the desert and helps the
recovery of Agriculture and industry،
Omar paid great
attention to the development of Agriculture and land reclamation, and issued a
general ruling in this regard that whoever repairs wastelands wherever they are
found throughout the state, their ownership will be transferred to him and if
he does not repair them within three years, they will be recovered from him.(3)
: Rule with
compassion and tolerance
Omar ruled with
compassion and tolerance, he treated issues with Justice and understanding,
which made him very popular and respected by citizens.
'Umar (may Allah be
pleased with him) cared about the freedom of Man and the maintenance of his
dignity, and he says addressing the Muslim delegations to Medina: "O
people, I and Allah have not sent workers (Princes) to beat your missionaries,
nor to take your money, but sent them to teach you your religion and the Sunnah
of your prophet. Amr ibn al-Aas said: if a man is polite to some of his
subjects, ask him about it..؟ He said: any one who has my soul in
his hand, then let me cut him off from him, and how can I not cut him off from
him, and I have seen the messenger of Allah cut off from himself..؟!».(4)
In short, it can be
said that Omar ibn al-Khattab comprehensively applied the concept of social
responsibility in his reign through his concern for social justice, caring for
the poor and needy, encouraging education and education, and taking care of the
environment and structure.
