The National Literacy Strategy aims for reading to become a habit for 50 per cent of Emirati adults and 80 per cent of Emirati school students. It also aims for the average number of books read by every student to reach 20 annually, and for half of Emirati parents to undertake to read to their children.
In December 2015, the UAE Cabinet declared 2016 as the Year of Reading. Pursuant to the declaration, the Cabinet issued directives to start preparing an integrated National Literacy Strategy and a framework to produce a reading generation and establish the UAE as the capital of cultural and knowledge content.
The late H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the then President of the UAE noted that reading is a basic skill for a new generation of scientists, intellectual, researchers and innovators. He stressed that the establishment of a knowledge-based economy requires nurturing a generation of readers who are fully aware of developments happening around them, as well as of the best ideas and the latest theories. Every year March is observed as the Month of Reading in the UAE.
