The National Strategy to Combat Desertification 2030 (Arabic, PDF, 941 KB) was launched to combat land degradation, drought and desertification. It focuses on the increase of land productivity, requalification of degraded lands, and protection of water resources by 2030. Through the strategy, the UAE Government aims to:
- 1-increase the efficiency of production systems by 40 per cent
- 2-requalify and restore at least 80 per cent of degraded land
- 3-increase the efficiency of water consumption, and increase the usage of treated water by 60 per cent.
The strategy includes 33 short and long-term initiatives and an agenda until 2030. It will be implemented on the basis of 5 pillars with their objectives. These pillars are:
- 1-Protecting the ecosystems and improving the bare and dry lands
- 2-Alleviating and adapting to the effects of climate change on ecosystems affected by desertification
- 3-Enhancing awareness and education, and building capacities to combat desertification at the national level
- 4-Adopting and applying modern technologies and enhancing scientific research in the field of desertification fighting
- 5-Enhancing partnerships and cooperation at the national, regional and international level.
