The National Energy and Water Demand Management Programme was launched in 2021. This program demonstrates the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure's commitment to consolidating efforts in the area of energy and water conservation. The National Energy and Water Demand Management Programme aims to increase efficiency in the three major energy-consuming sectors: transportation, industry, and construction by 40%. The Ministry is committed to staying at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and staying updated on technological advancements that align with its approach to managing energy and water demand, in line with its vision of becoming a global leader.

The programme combines all stakeholders in the UAE to realise the objectives of the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and UAE Water Security Strategy 2036.

Policy Objectives

1. Achieve a 40% reduction in total energy demand by 2050 according to the UAE Energy Strategy 2050.
2. Achieve a 21% reduction in total water resource demand according to the Water Security Strategy 2036.
3. Ensure supply security in the energy sector and enhance energy self-sufficiency in the country.
4. Support diversification of the energy mix in the country by integrating clean and renewable energy sources.
5. Support carbon reduction initiatives and ensure efficient use of energy resources and current generation capacity.
6. Achieve sustainable economic development.
7. Consolidate efforts by federal and local government entities.
8. Meet the requirements of the water-food nexus policy.

The programme consists of three main pillars:

1. Energy:

   This includes initiatives to reduce energy consumption in the three largest energy-consuming sectors in the UAE: industry, transportation, and construction, aiming to achieve a 40% reduction in energy demand by 2050.

2. Water:

   This involves initiatives to reduce water consumption in major water-consuming sectors (agriculture and buildings) to enhance water efficiency, contributing to improving GDP and enhancing the UAE’s competitiveness in sustainability and economic fields.

3. Consumption Rationalization:

   This is a comprehensive awareness plan targeting consumer within specific categories (families, students, employees, workers, and tourists) to promote efficient consumption practices.

Expected Outcomes

1. The expected investment volume in the programme is approximately AED 171 million, with a GDP impact estimated at around AED 2,111 million by 2050, equivalent to 4% of the expected net impact on GDP in the same year.
2. Reduce energy demand by 40% by 2050 in the industrial, construction, and transportation sectors.
3. Reduce water demand by 50% by 2050 in the buildings and agriculture sectors.
4. Raise awareness among community members about energy and water consumption efficiency.
