Google has released its ‘Year in Search’ 2014 report listing the
worldwide top most popular searches on its search engine goole.
com, with the death of the US comedian Robin Williams topping the
list. Formerly referred to as “Zeitgeist” (Spirit of the age), the 2014
report has been rename as “Year in Search”, offering insights into
how people around the world used the most popular search engine
‘google.com’.
The top global trending search of 2014
was the story of American comedian
Robin Williams’ death in August 2014, fol-
lowed by World Cup competitions which
took place in Brazil in June 2014 and
then came Ebola virus outbreak in West
Africa.
The Year in Search report is a collec-
tion of lists containing the most debated
and most searched topics. The most de-
bated list shows the searched terms that
caused the most increase in traffic during
a specific period of the year 2014 com-
pared to the same period of 2013. Mean-
while, the charts of the “most searched”
terms are based on the huge number of
searches around the year.
Williams’ death was followed by World
Cup 2014 that took place in Brazil last
June, then Ebola which spread in West
Africa.
The Malaysian Airlines that experience
two disasters last year, was the fourth
among top searches, followed by Ice
Bucket Challenge which went viral on
social media sites with many celebrities
participating in it.
Interestingly, the mobile game ‘Flabby
Bird’, developed by Vietnam-based de-
veloper Nguyen Ha Dong in three days,
came sixth worldwide in the top ten list,
beating out Destiny, the most expensive
game ever developed with a cost of US$
275 million.
