The
UAE government succeeded in employing social media chan-
nels in connecting with the public by listening to them and
delivering information and messages. These channels provided a good
platform for dialogue and open discussion between the Government and
the people.
The UAE is considered a unique case in investing and employing social
media channels to serve the community and enhance its role in under-
standing and meeting the public needs. The UAE offers a direct example
on the wise use of modern technology to meet the needs of customers.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-
President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, is considered one of the
top leaders in the world with the most followers on social media websites.
His Highness uses various social media channels to express personal
views, philosophy and reflect on his experience as a leader and a human
to funnel positive energy to people urging them to employ this energy
to better serve their community. His Highness employs such channels to
share moments of happiness and sadness with the community and com-
mend the achievements of community members.
mGov 11th issue includes a report stating that the followers of His High-
ness on social media channels have exceeded six million, with three mil-
lion followers on his Twitter account, and more than two million followers
on his Facebook page. His Google+ page that was launched by His High-
ness last February has more than 600,000 followers now. It is a diverse
page that focuses on business and projects in more detail. He has more
than 500,000 followers on Instagram.
In a survey conducted by mGov, the Smart Taxi app users rated the app
4.5 out of 5 on both iOS and Android platforms. They said that the use
mechanism is easy and clear and the service it provides makes it much
easier to book and order a taxi in Dubai.
App users, however, unanimously agreed that the lack of sufficient num-
ber of taxis in the emirate is the only weakness of the app.
Under QR, we review a number of YouTube videos including an introduc-
tory video posted by the Information Office of Dubai Government about the
Dubai Government Towards 2021 initiative. The initiative was launched by
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,
Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.
Under Lab Dot Com, we take a tour of the website of the Ministry of Cul-
ture, Youth and Community Development which helps the government
achieve its mission namely promoting cultural and community awareness,
reinforcing the national identity and reviving heritage through effective co-
ordination with partners and its excellent services and human resources
through the use of innovative and advanced methods.
In this issue, we also report on local and international news in the fields of
technology and information and communications technology, smartphone
and tablet apps and the latest mGov apps.
