development

efforts of

economy, and

society

The Telecommunications Regulatory Au-

thority (TRA) has signed a memorandum

of understanding (MoU) with the Telecom

Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The

MoU was inked during September 2015

during the joint commission meetings

that both countries held in New Delhi,

in the presence of UAE foreign minister

H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Na-

hyan and Minister of State H.E. Reem

Al Hashimi. The MoU aims to strengthen

collaboration between the two countries

within the Telecommunications and Infor-

mation and Communications technology

(ICT) sector.

Pursuant to the MoU, the two telecom

regulators will cooperate, coordinate and

share knowledge in ICT areas, and par-

ticipation in international events and fo-

rums.

H.E. Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, TRA’s

director general said: “This agreement

falls within the framework of bilateral co-

operation between the UAE and India,

and aims to secure optimum utilization

of the telecommunication sector to best

serve the development efforts, economy,

and knowledge society, which will reflect

positively on the competitiveness of both

countries”.

“The importance of the telecommunica-

tions sector is reflected through the stra-

tegic role it plays in our contemporary so-

ciety, as it contributes significantly in the

economic and social development. We

regard taking advantage of the global ex-

pertise and strengthening ties with inter-

national stakeholders as necessities for

the growth and prosperity of this sector,”

Al Mansoori added.

He continued saying: “TRA believes that

the telecommunications sector is a strate-

gic catalyst that will accelerate the UAE’s

competitiveness. Moreover, TRA is al-

ways keen to exchange knowledge and

experience within the ICT field and imple-

ment the best practices and solutions

that contribute positively to developing a

knowledge–based economy through ICT

robust tools”.

Areas of collaboration between India and

the UAE will include exchange of infor-

mation and expertise relating to techno-

logical developments, new technologies

universal, and regulatory policies; uni-

versal services, Mobile Number Portabil-

ity (MNP), spectrum issues, green tele-

coms, e-government and e-services, and

participation in international events and

forums, amongst other issues.

TRAI secretary Sudhir Gupta and TRA

director general H.E. Hamad Obaid Al

Mansoori signed the MoU.

Additionally, Al Mansoori and TRA senior

manager for international affairs Nasser

Bin Hammad met with Indian Minister

of Road and Transport Ravi Shankar

Prasad to exchange point of views re-

garding many significant topics such as

UN post-2015 sustainable development

agenda that will be validated by the Gen-

eral Assembly during this month.

Moreover, meeting attendees exchanged

thoughts about the challenges facing

the telecommunications sector including

broadband services, cyber security, and

the promotion of investment in telecom-

munications and ICT companies. Both

parties agreed that discussing such top-

ics further is crucial during bilateral meet-

ings on the sidelines of international fo-

rums.
