TRA: 30 million mobile phone
numbers to telecomproviders
The Telecommunications Regulatory Au-
thority (TRA) has released 30 million num-
bers to mobile providers Etisalat and du.
This came as part of the four line codes
licensed by TRA namely 050, 055, 056 &
052.
Majed Al Mesmar, Deputy Director Gener-
al, TRA, said that this is the total numbers
released to providers since mobile phone
services have been offered in the UAE.
He stated that TRA always makes sure to
provide numbers in accordance with pro-
viders’ needs.
The TRA has previously announced that
providers have used up to 22.5 million
numbers out of 28 million numbers, which
were released to providers by the end of
the “My Number, My Identity” campaign
last year.
According to the TRA, the “My Number,
My Identity” campaign led to the data up-
dating of more than 8,600,000 SIM cards
for those required to re-register and the
registration of over 15,600,000 SIM cards
over the course of the campaign.
The 18-month, six-phase My Number, My
Identity campaign launched by the TRA
started in June 2012 and ended in Janu-
ary 2014. The TRA said that data regis-
tration and updating is a prerequisite for
providing and continuance of telecom
services. Both licensees Etisalat and du
updated their existing subscribers’ data
and entered registration data for new sub-
scribers in order to be able to access and
benefit from telecom services.
As part of developing subscriber registra-
tion services, both licensees developed
online registration and updating services,
expected to be linked to other entities to
facilitate the registration and updating
processes. Notable among these enti-
ties is Emirates Identity Authority (EIDA).
The linking project with licensees Etisalat
and du is still under construction but a top
priority. Until its completion, data should
continue to be updated using the available
methods for each licensee.
